As part of MAKE’s research for our upcoming special issue, Make: Ultimate Guide to the 3D Printers (on newsstands Nov 20, 2012), we had an opportunity to take the new MakerBot Replicator 2 for a test drive. Here’s a tour of the new machine.

Co-founder of Makerbot, Bre Pettis acquires milling machine firm Other Machine
Former CEO and co-founder of 3D printing company Makerbot, Bre Pettis has bought a non 3D printing relevant company – the CNC milling equipment corporation Other Machine.
American corporation, Other Machine operates from Berkeley and is the inventor of the Othermill Pro desktop milling equipment. Bre Pettis at present acts as CEO and founding father of Bre & Co, established in 2016, the corporation creates personalized 3D printed gifts and heirlooms.
Other Machine brought out its Othermill product line on Kickstarter with the original machine raising over $311,000 back in 2013. The most current equipment, the Othermill Pro, at this time is sold for $3,199.
Making use of its 3-axis toolhead, the machine has the potential to mill Printed Wiring Boards and carve 3D shapes. The chief characteristic of the machine is being able to be incorporated in an office setup. The Othermill Pro is sufficiently small enough to fit on a desk, quiet enough to feature in a social workplace and can help you speed up production processes by creating in-house rather than outsourcing.
Coupled with hardware machines, the Berkeley firm has additionally designed its own Otherplan software for the CNC machines. Bre Pettis claims he is “thrilled” to acquire Other Machine as,
The Othermill Pro is an breathtaking milling machine that is so accurate that electrical engineers can mill Printed Wiring Boards with 6 mil traces and build Printed Wiring Boards faster than a Printed Wiring Board service. I’m ecstatic to return in the arena supporting innovators.
Printed Wiring Boards and electronic products
CEO of Other Machine, Dr. Danielle Applestone explains, “I anticipate building on our commitment of accessible prototyping machines for expert engineers and empowering a generation of students using the Othermill Pro to learn and make their thoughts a real possibility.”
Applestone also explained she will keep doing the job in her position as CEO and is “thrilled to have Bre’s support.”
